G.E.A.R. 2010 was an event that drew out every single human emotion, with PAIN being at the top of the list. As alarm clocks sounded throughout the island in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 30, Team G4S descended upon the village of Umatac, Guam, located at the southern most point of the island.
At 4:00am exactly flares were lit atop Mount Bolanos some 1,200 feet (approximately 367 meters) above; racers would have to navigate atop the mountain in the dark through thick jungle and ravines.
As light was beginning to peak over the horizon, Team G4S made their way to the beach where two team members boarded two-man kayaks and the other two began the long coasteer to Cetti Bay and the mouth of Cetti River. Upon returning to Umatac, Team G4S got onto mountain bikes for a route into the highlands that overlook the bay.
Team G4S then faced a 2.8 mile trekking leg in the midday sun. The leg challenged G4S to find the best route across a parched landscape of steep hills crosscut by small streams that had eroded the earth in a labyrinth of valleys.
As darkness descended, the climatic conditions of race day created an environment that was unforgiving and difficult even for the most highly trained athletes. Extremely high temperatures combined with high humidity and no wind to pull fluids out of racers bodies and superheat their cores, yet Team G4S persevered to the end. Well Done!
